Celebrating 75 years of the Superior Refinery

For 75 years, the Superior Refinery has fueled communities and industries and stands as a pillar of resilience in Wisconsin. Since beginning operations in 1951, the refinery has played a key role in the region’s economy and energy infrastructure.

“This milestone is a chance to reflect on the generations of employees and community members who have supported the refinery over the years,” says Matt Gunn, General Manager, Superior Refinery. “We’re proud of the progress we’ve made and the strong foundation we’ve built for the future. Our team has worked hard to ensure the refinery operates safely and responsibly. We’re committed to continuous improvement and to being a good neighbor in the community.”

Many families have helped build this legacy — including a mother–daughter team and two brothers who all work at the refinery.

Dee Hooker started at the refinery in 2012 and has worked in many roles on the operations side of the business, moving into her current role as Loading Superintendent in 2022. Her daughter, Breanne Gregerson, HR Advisor, says, “I never imagined my mom and I would end up working at the same company — let alone in the same building. Having my mom here gave me confidence when I started, and it’s special to share this experience with someone who truly understands the values and culture of the refinery. Working alongside her creates a sense of pride and shared purpose.”

Stories like Dee and Breanne’s highlight the strong sense of community and continuity that has defined the refinery for generations — a legacy that has endured both change and progress. Over the decades, the refinery has undergone several ownership transitions and major upgrades, including a significant rebuild completed under Cenovus’s leadership following a fire in 2018. These investments have modernized the facility, enhanced safety systems, and improved operational capabilities.

The refinery employs nearly 300 full-time employees. Miguel Kelleher, Lead Terminal Operator, enjoys working with his brother, Dennis Kelleher, Safety Representative, and shares that “having a stable job with great benefits so close to home has been a real blessing for us.” Dennis adds that his favorite project they worked on together was a safety program rollout. Their experience speaks to the refinery’s core values of Protect what matters and Do it together

The Superior Refinery produces more than 740 million gallons of products annually, including heavy fuel oils and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The facility operates a marine terminal – the only fueling station within the Port of Duluth-Superior – and is integrated with the Enbridge Mainline system, reinforcing its role as a vital hub in North America’s energy network. These features play a key role in meeting regional fuel demands while supporting economic growth across the Midwest.

As one of North America’s top three asphalt suppliers, Cenovus leverages the refinery to serve markets across the continental United States – delivering essential products that keep roads paved, supply chains moving and communities connected.

As Cenovus celebrates this milestone, we’re grateful to the employees, contractors, and community partners who have helped shape the refinery’s legacy. Their commitment is the reason Superior will continue to thrive – embracing innovation, sustainability and community partnership to meet the energy needs of tomorrow.
