Cyber security and beyond: Ryley Cej's growth in the Cenovus New Grad Program
Our New Grad Program at Cenovus Energy is developing the IT experts we need to navigate the increasingly complex digital world. Ryley Cej, Cyber Security Analyst, is ready to support our cyber needs after completing three IT-focused rotations with the program. We recently sat down with Ryley to learn more about his experience.
Q: How did you first hear about Cenovus’s New Grad Program, and what made you think "this is the place for me?”
A: I first heard about the New Grad Program through a peer who was in the program at the time. After further research, it became clear that this program was an ideal fit for me as I started my career because it offered the opportunity to explore various areas of IT, helping me identify my interests and potential career paths. I was also impressed by Cenovus's progressive culture, which further increased my interest in the program.
Q: What are the coolest projects and teams you've worked on during your new grad rotations?
A: During my three rotations, I’ve worked with the Downstream IT, Upstream IT and Cyber Governance, Risk & Compliance teams. I had the chance to work with amazing people across IT, making it tough to decide where to specialize after the program.
One of the most interesting projects I participated in was developing an internally hosted cyber risk assessment process with the Cyber, Governance, Risk & Compliance team. This project required collaboration to determine the necessary controls for an internal solution and I gained valuable insights into the various ways threat actors can compromise and steal data. Another interesting project I participated in was identifying issues (from a technical perspective) in the company’s Geophysics workflows. Due to the massive datasets and nature of this work, this project exposed me to unique problems and creative solutions. In a lot of ways, Cenovus is a science and technology company given how important subsurface knowledge, instrumentation and data are to the business.
Q: How will being part of the New Grad Program shape your career aspirations in the long run?
A: The most valuable aspect of the New Grad Program is its rotational structure where participants can explore and specialize in areas of the discipline they are passionate about. For me, this meant discovering I have a keen interest in cyber security and the opportunity to develop my skills in this field. It also connected me with teams across IT, giving me a broader perspective of the challenges faced throughout the organization. This exposure helps me bring unique perspectives to my current and future roles.
Q: When you're not working, what are your go-to activity for fun and relaxation?
A: My favourite activity outside of work is playing hockey.
I play in a recreational league with a few friends which is a fantastic way to unwind and enjoy myself. In addition to hockey, I am an avid gaming and technology enthusiast which isn’t too surprising given my career in IT! I also have a passion for travel. My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Europe and are eagerly planning a visit to Japan this fall.
Q: Do you have any advice for soon-to-be graduates who are about to start their careers?
A: Your experience in the New Grad Program will be what you make it. Don’t be afraid to put your hand up for opportunities or bring forward your ideas. Your ambition, drive and enthusiasm are your biggest assets. Additionally, if you get the opportunity to do a site tour, I highly recommend it. You will learn about how the business operates and get valuable context for the work you do every day.
Opportunities to join our New Grad Program are typically posted between May and August each year, but keep an eye on our postings regularly as openings may arise.
