Transporting our products
In addition to pipelines, we also transport our oil by rail. Rail transportation allows us to reach customers and refineries located in areas that aren’t connected to a major pipeline. We want every barrel of Cenovus’s oil to reach its destination safely, no matter how it’s transported. According to the Railway Association of Canada, shipments of dangerous goods arrive at their destination incident free 99.98 percent of the time.
We own a crude-by-rail loading facility near Edmonton, Alberta. The Bruderheim Energy Terminal is part of our strategy to create additional transportation options for our products and is designed to help us capture global prices for our oil. We’ve hired a third-party service provider to help us manage the rail terminal, and we apply the same rigour and attention to safety, environmental performance and operational excellence that we demonstrate in our oil and natural gas production operations.
We lease a fleet of coiled and insulated rail cars to safely transport our products to market.
We were recently recognized by the Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS) with the 2017 Hazardous Material Shipper Safety Award. This is the second time Cenovus has been recognized by the KCS with this award and further demonstrates our commitment to load and move our product from origin to destination as safely as possible. In 2017, Cenovus shipped over 1,350 units on KCS rail lines without incident and this success wouldn’t be possible without our strong partnerships with our loading terminals.
In 2017, we were recognized for our commitment to safely transporting chemical products. The Pinnacle Award honours Union Pacific customers for implementing release prevention protocols, corrective action plans and having zero non-accident releases of regulated hazardous materials shipments.
