Youth across Canada tackle science challenges during online STEM Fair

May 2020 - The 2020 Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) and most of the 103 regional science fairs across the country may have been cancelled, but the passion for discovery and innovation amongst Canadian youth will not be denied. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, resulting in travel restrictions and physical distancing measures that forced cancellation of the in-person event, Youth Science Canada (YSC) organizers thought innovatively and launched the YSC Online STEM Fair, a showcase for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“At Cenovus, we believe it’s important to motivate and inspire youth by providing them with skill development opportunities and experiences that give them a chance for a strong and vibrant future,” says Leanne Courchesne, Lead for Community Investment at Cenovus. “That is one of the reasons Cenovus had signed on to support the CWSF, and we are proud to continue our participation in the online event as the Energy Challenge Sponsor.”

As part of our participation in the online event, Cenovus will have 15 staff volunteers judging the Energy Challenge submissions remotely and will be recognizing outstanding student projects on the website.

The YSC Online STEM Fair runs May 20 - 29 and is open to any student in Canada from grades 7 to 12 looking to showcase their ideas and discoveries through a “virtual exhibit”. During the week the projects will be available on the website, and judges will release their results May 29.
