August 2020 – Originally from Alberta but studying in Ontario, Amelia Knapp was looking for a different kind of work experience as she completed her second year in Commerce at Queens University.

“I thought the Fuel student and new graduate program might broaden my horizons and give me some experience in the oil and gas industry,” says Amelia. “I had also heard the students in the program were a close-knit group, so I was looking forward to a supportive community atmosphere!”

Amelia has been working as a trading student in the crude department under Cenovus’s downstream branch and has been contributing on various files. Some of her main projects have been organizing transactions to support the traders, and compiling Cenovus-specific tolls and tariffs information, which will be the topic of her final presentation in late August.

“Two months into my work term, I have had no shortage of information or opportunities to learn,” says Amelia. “The experience has been something that I couldn’t have gained in a lecture hall and I am coming out of this placement with a lot more knowledge about the oil and gas industry and trading commodities.”

Amelia’s time at Cenovus has looked different than a normal student work term due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, she has used the opportunity to make the most of the virtual network and has introduced herself and participated in virtual meetings with people from across the organization.

With her work term ending in a few weeks, Amelia is excited to showcase all her learnings and experiences at the end-of-term student presentations to the Cenovus Leadership Team.

“Cenovus provides a unique student development program and I look forward to demonstrating what I have been able to accomplish and contribute to the team,” says Amelia. “Participating in the Fuel program has helped me create a professional work foundation and prepared me for success in future endeavors.”
