Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero Alliance

On June 9th, 2021, Cenovus Energy joined with Canadian Natural Resources, Imperial, MEG Energy and Suncor Energy to launch the Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero Alliance. The Alliance has since expanded to include ConocoPhillips Canada. The goal of this unprecedented industry collaboration is to achieve a phased reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the companies’ oil sands operations, reaching net zero emissions by 2050. This will help Canada meet its climate goals, including its Paris Agreement commitments and 2050 net zero aspirations. Collaboration between industry and government will be critical to progressing the Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero vision and helping Canada achieve its climate goals. There is no single pathway to achieving net zero emissions from oil sands operations. The Pathways vision will require advancing multiple technologies. Initially, it will be anchored by a major carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) network with the capacity to connect more than twenty oil sands operations to a sequestration hub where captured carbon can be safely stored underground instead of being released into the atmosphere. The pipeline and sequestration hub will also be open to other industries in the area that are looking to reduce emissions.
