Quality & innovation: Where research meets the road
Cenovus is committed to continuous quality control in the asphalt construction process. Our technical services team will ensure customers get the right product every time – from specification setting and bid tendering, until the final load is down.
Cenovus has a long-standing reputation for delivering quality asphalt products. It starts with our Lloydminster Refinery which operates under an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015, to ensure safety, reliability and quality.
With controls across our entire refinery and terminal network, as well as product testing completed by our technical services and innovation team at our AASHTO-accredited lab, you can trust products provided by Cenovus Asphalt will comply with extensive quality control.
By being actively involved in specification development committees for North American and international operations, we've come up with solutions that set new industry standards.
Our scientists prove that asphalt can be refined and upgraded in the lab. Testing ideas is a painstaking process, but it’s how breakthroughs are made and quality is maintained.
Cenovus Asphalt's technical services & innovation team has contributed to industry-leading technical innovation in response to customer need in collaboration with key industry partners.
Cenovus’s commitment to asphalt and emulsion product and specification development is seen in our commitment to research and our specific research projects. Our innovations allow customers to build long-lasting and low-maintenance roads that perform in all climatic and traffic conditions.
Cenovus Endowed Research Chair in Bituminous Materials at the University of Calgary
For more than 25 years, the Cenovus Endowed Research Chair in Bituminous Materials at the University of Calgary has been Canada’s top centre of asphalt research.
Dr. Martin Jasso and his team of engineers, chemists and physicists have patented several new pavement products, asphalt repair techniques and new road-testing procedures.
Cenovus’s AASHTO-accredited laboratory in Saskatoon
Cenovus’s AASHTO-accredited laboratory in Saskatoon is more than a research facility. The lab’s key function is to develop new grades of asphalt products and conduct quality-control testing, but our knowledgeable technical services team is also available to support your business.

Black Max™ PMA
Cenovus produces high-quality polymer-modified asphalts (PMA) that withstand all weather and traffic conditions by providing:
- exceptional resistance to rutting, fatigue, reflective and cold temperature cracking
- improved tensile strength and aggregate-asphalt adhesion
- superior performance in extreme temperatures and heavy traffic
- increased service life and reduced life-cycle cost.
Black Max™ PMA requires no special handling, mixing, storage or transportation. It’s business as usual, with superior results.
Cenovus’s recycled asphalt products (RAP) uses our superior-quality asphalt to create an industry-leading approach to building sustainable roads and can come with substantial cost savings and environmental stewardship. Recycling pavement offers many benefits:
- Lower construction costs – Experts estimate cost savings between 20-50% from reduced transportation, time and materials.
- Increased road life cycle - The Pavement Preservation and Recycling Alliance (PPRA) offers compelling sample data showing a recycling-first approach can add between seven and 25 years of pavement life.
- Environmental stewardship – Conserves natural resources and reduces energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of transportation required.
- Faster time to finish – In-place recycling can reduce or even eliminate time for trucking and hauling of construction materials. Many RAP treatments can be opened to traffic immediately upon completion.
Cenovus Asphalt cements have proven resistant to cracking and rutting caused by environmental changes. We manufacture more than 60 performance-graded asphalt products to meet the growing demands of the paving industry.
Produced from crude petroleum at our refineries, asphalt cement is combined with aggregate to create firm road surfaces and can be modified to meet a variety of project and industry specifications.
Cenovus Asphalt has a wide selection of emulsion products to meet your needs. We manufacture more than 30 emulsified asphalts for use in road construction and maintenance, including dust control, base stabilization and micro-surfacing.
- Prime coat and tack coat
- Graded aggregate seal coats and chip seals
- Fog seal
- Micro-surfacing and quick set slurry
- Plant mix and road mix
- Dust control
- Spray patching
- Crack filling
- Cold and hot-in-place recycling and full-depth reclamation
- Preservative and restorative seals
Cenovus Asphalt offers a range of standard and specialty-grade medium-cure (MC) and slow-cure (SC) asphalt cutbacks. These can be used for road construction and maintenance processes as well as some industrial applications.
Cenovus works with customers to create custom cutback asphalt products or provide alternatives suited to their needs.
