Then & now: Meet Nic and Sherron from our Lloydminster operations

We believe today’s students are Cenovus Energy’s future experts and leaders. Our student and new grad programs provide meaningful work experiences to ensure participants can thrive in their careers. Many students and new grads stay with Cenovus for years and even decades.

This includes Nic Lundquist and Sherron Robinson, who are both success stories from our Student Program. Starting as students at our Lloydminster operations, Nic and Sherron have stayed with Cenovus throughout their careers, developing their technical and leadership skills and eventually transitioning into leadership roles.

Learn more about how they got their start ‘then’ and where they are ‘now’.

Nic Lundquist, Senior Supervisor, Process Unit, Steam Plant & Control Lab

Nic Lundquist began his Cenovus journey in 2012 as a Fourth-Class Power Engineer student at our original Pikes Peak Thermal facility, which has since been decommissioned. Nic’s responsibilities included supporting key operational elements such as treating water and generating steam used in our production processes.

After his time as a student, Nic progressed to become a First-Class Power Engineer and is currently the Senior Supervisor of the Process Unit, Steam Plant and Control Lab at our Lloydminster Refinery. In his current role, his responsibilities include managing operators, budgeting and business planning. Before becoming a leader, Nic spent a decade as an operator at the Lloydminster Upgrader, gaining valuable expertise in various areas such as the crude unit, utilities plant, sulphur recovery and electricity cogeneration.

“I’ve stayed with Cenovus because of the abundant growth opportunities we offer. As an integrated oil and gas company with a great mix of assets, Cenovus allows me to explore diverse technical areas and operational environments, providing fresh learning experiences and challenges,” Nic shared. “Moreover, Cenovus’s commitment to developing its people creates different pathways for me to continuously gain new skills.”

Sherron Robinson, Maintenance Readiness Manager

Sherron Robinson completed three student terms with Cenovus, starting with the company in 2007 as a summer student at our Lloydminster Ethanol Plant, where she supported operations and maintenance tasks. In 2010, she joined the drafting group at the Lloydminster Upgrader, handling piping and instrumentation diagrams, piping drawings and plot plans. The following year, she joined the process reliability engineering team, developing design solutions and managing certain piping projects.

Fast forward to today, Sherron now manages the Maintenance Readiness team, overseeing a team of engineers and planners supporting our Christina Lake, Foster Creek, Sunrise, Lloydminster Thermal and Conventional Heavy Oil operations, focusing on preventative maintenance programs and support.

Through her career, Sherron’s roles have evolved from a Process Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to a Unit Contact Engineer, and then a shift in focus from operational processes to reliability and mechanical engineering. As an EIT at our Lloydminster Upgrader, Sherron says her favourite part of the experience was working on site during maintenance turnarounds, where she completed internal vessel inspections. “I think it’s safe to say I have crawled through almost every vessel at the upgrader!” says Sherron.

When asked why she’s stayed with Cenovus for almost two decades, Sherron shares two reasons, “First, the exposure and experience I’ve gained in live operating facilities has been invaluable for my technical development. Second, the talented and skilled staff I have worked with over the years are truly the company’s greatest asset. These people make me excited to work here.”
