At Cenovus Energy, we believe that in order to build the workforce of the future we must begin by giving young people meaningful workplace positions that provide opportunities for starting them on the road to achieving their career aspirations. Our comprehensive Student Program paves the way for students to make significant contributions at Cenovus and develop into the leaders and experts our industry needs for the future.

Every year, hundreds of students join teams across our business. These roles span a wide range of professions and locations, from engineering roles at our Lloydminster Upgrader to Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health at our head office in Calgary, Alberta.

“We are lucky to attract so many talented and enthusiastic young people who are intent on making a difference in our industry,” says Michelle Zacher, who leads our student and new grad programs. “We want to do our part in kickstarting their career, curiosity and confidence, helping to shape their unique perspectives through real-life applications of the skills they bring with them from their studies. And, unsurprisingly, we learn a lot from them along the way.”

Our Student Program supports co-op, summer and practicum students with work terms that range from four to 16 months. This flexibility allows students at different stages of their education journey to apply and participate. Our students dive straight into meaningful projects and networking opportunities that build their skills and understanding of our business alongside their area of study.

Here is what some of our current students have to say about their time with us so far:

"I am pursuing a master's degree at the University of Calgary and am currently working as part of the Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health team. The transition from studying at the University of Calgary to working with Cenovus has been truly transformative. Throughout my work-term as a student, I have been given opportunities to deepen my understanding of Cenovus and the industry as a whole by working with several teams outside of my own department. Through opportunities working at multiple sites, I have gained hands-on experience learning about the overall oil and natural gas extraction and production process – which has been one of the highlights of my time here."

- Christina Chen, Student, Industrial Hygiene & Occupational Health in Calgary, AB

“My transition from studying at university to working at Cenovus has been incredibly smooth thanks to my supportive team. Being a part of our turnaround operations played a huge part in increasing my understanding of the safety protocols and teamwork that is necessary for safe and successful operations. The guidance I have received from my mentor and wider team has been invaluable. Participating in the slow-pitch league was a huge highlight and aided in connecting with the people I work with on a more personal level. My time at Cenovus has been enriching at all levels and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great company, team and leadership.”

- Taher Youssouf, Student, Site Safety in Minnedosa, MB

“I’m currently a third-year chemical engineering student on a 12-month co-op term at Cenovus’s Lloydminster Upgrader, gaining hands-on experience as a Unit Contact Engineer. From day one, I was amazed by how welcoming and supportive my mentors and team members were, their support has made this experience incredibly fulfilling. Working on process optimization projects and troubleshooting issues has offered exciting challenges and rewarding opportunities which have not only expanded my expertise but allowed me to make a meaningful contribution to our facility and my team's objectives. Every day presents new learning opportunities, and I'm excited to continue growing both personally and professionally during my time with Cenovus.”

- Dev Jayswal, Student, Unit Contact Engineering in Lloydminster, AB/SK

“In my nine months so far with Cenovus I have received phenomenal guidance from mentors and peers alike. My team has been invaluable to both my professional development and my knowledge of the fundamentals of data analytics, reporting and visualization. I am enrolled in the Master’s of Data Science and Analytics program at the University of Calgary – and am excited to complete my master’s with what I know now after my exposure to so many parts of Cenovus’s business. The thing I have found most encouraging about my time here is the emphasis on collaboration.”

- Carmen Snow, Student, Data & IT Production Control in Calgary, AB
