I&D in motion at Dragon Boat Races across our operating regions

See how our FUSION@Cenovus inclusion and diversity network paddled for unity (and medals).

If you have ever seen a dragon boat race, you would know how much synchronization and team harmony is required to glide a large boat straight through the water with pace and rhythm. Cenovus Energy’s inclusion and diversity employee network, FUSION@Cenovus, took on that challenge this summer in two separate races.

Members of the network rowed their way to an Energy Cup silver medal at the Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival August 9-11, 2024. The team, made up of our staff from a variety of different professions, cultures and backgrounds, came together and practiced diligently to deliver their best performance and teamwork to date.

“We united and paddled together as one cohesive team,” says Joey Nguyen, Chair of the FUSION@Cenovus network. “We had around 100 Cenovus staff involved as team members, coaches, volunteers and supporters, along with our families and friends cheering us on.”

In Superior, Wisconsin, where we operate one of our three U.S. refineries in the Midwest, another one of our FUSION@Cenovus Dragon Boat teams took part in the Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival on August 23 and 24. “Not only is this a great place to interact with your coworkers, but it also builds trust and relationships,” says Paul Zelenka, a supply chain management team lead from our U.S. downstream operations who paddled in the Superior race. “Although my arms felt like jello after the races, it was well worth it.” 

At Cenovus, we know that we’re a stronger company when everyone feels like they can bring their whole selves to work and supporting FUSION@Cenovus, our inclusion and diversity network, is one way we create that environment.

“Inclusion and diversity networks have a powerful effect on staff experience and well-being, especially at Cenovus, where it’s clear our company cares about our sense of belonging, community and safety at work,” says Joey.

Our FUSION@Cenovus network’s mission is to bridge the cultural gaps between our staff with events throughout the year like these annual races, educational presentations, networking opportunities and cultural showcases.
