Gaining experience and challenging himself: New Grad Cedric Madondo
August 2022 - Originally from Zimbabwe, Cedric Madondo moved to Canada after high school to attend the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He began his post-secondary journey in the engineering program, but after taking some business electives, found his future goals were more aligned with the commerce program. So, he made the switch!
Since he comes from a family of accountants (and is good with numbers), Cedric decided to pursue a concentration in accounting. Fast forward three, cold years of Winnipeg winters and Cedric decided to transfer to the University of Lethbridge for his last year of post-secondary.
“After completing my Bachelor of Management in Accounting, I was looking for an opportunity to develop my career in oil and gas in Alberta,” explains Cedric. “The Cenovus Energy New Grad Program provides the opportunity to rotate through many different departments, which is really appealing for someone just starting out.”
Our New Grad Program is three years in length, with participants expected to complete three, 12-month work assignments. Each area within the program has a variety of possible rotation assignments and focuses on giving participants a variety of experience within their discipline.
For his first-year rotation in the program, Cedric is working as a Financial Analyst, CPA-in-training, with the Conventional Operations Finance team. He’s currently assigned to perform financial analysis for our Rainbow Lake asset, doing month-to-month and year-to-date performance reviews to provide a comprehensive financial summary.
“I’ve received hands-on experience with evaluating historical and current financial data, preparing reports, gathering and organizing information, and so many other tasks,” shares Cedric. “It’s been great getting to know my co-workers and finding ways I can add value to my projects and tasks.”
With so many opportunities to meet people from different teams and backgrounds at Cenovus, Cedric has been connecting with people across teams to try and learn more and understand the business from different perspectives.
“This program is already giving me the experience to help me develop a successful career and meeting such a wide network of people is so important and an added bonus to the actual work,” says Cedric. “I am eager to challenge myself through this program and will strive to continually improve and learn during my time at Cenovus.”
