Empowering future innovators in our industry: Cenovus donates $2.5 million to Saskatchewan Polytechnic

Fueling our next generation of talent in Saskatoon

Cenovus Energy recently announced a $2.5 million donation to Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Time to Rise campaign, which will fund the construction of the school’s Joseph A. Remai Saskatoon campus. In recognition of the investment, the campus’s new centralized chemical technology, power engineering and instrumentation engineering labs will be named the Cenovus Energy Labs.

The Cenovus Energy Labs will exist within the new School of Energy and be a state-of-the-art, modern learning environment for various disciplines related to the energy industry. These labs will provide students with the latest technology, equipment and hands-on training needed to foster innovation and prepare them for success in our rapidly evolving industry.

This investment will contribute capital funding for the space itself, equip the labs with the latest tools and resources, and support the development of programming for the students who will utilize the Cenovus Energy Labs.

Cenovus President & CEO Jon McKenzie announced the investment to students, faculty and government officials on September 6, emphasizing the importance of developing our future pipeline of talent and our commitment to investing in the regions where our employees live and work.

“Saskatchewan  Polytechnic continues to play a critical role in the community and in the oil and gas industry,” said Jon. “It’s developing a pipeline of talent in this region to support the long-term growth of our sector, and this latest donation and the creation of the Cenovus Energy Labs supports this.”

This investment underscores our commitment to enhancing job and career readiness, delivering cutting-edge skills training and fostering professional network development for young people. The Cenovus Energy Labs will provide practical education to over 5,000 students annually, creating a strong pipeline of future talent.

“Our operations in the region are critical to our long-term strategy and their success is underpinned by our strong partnerships and investments in the community,” said Jon. “In fact, in 2023, we invested $10 million in community initiatives in the region. Our business is a part of an ever-evolving industry, and we’re excited to be contributing to the education of future energy experts.”
