Polymer flooding

Polymer flooding

Water flood technology uses water to get additional oil out of a reservoir. Polymer is a gel material added to the water to thicken it and further improve results of the flood. In 2003, we began injecting polymer into select horizontal injection wells as part of a pilot program at Pelican Lake. The pilot showed that polymer injection can increase the oil recovery at Pelican Lake by approximately 10 percent. We have been commercially injecting polymer at Pelican Lake since 2006.

Polymer is commonly used in water treatment, waste water treatment, food processing, drilling muds and soil conservation. In our operations, by making the water thicker, it increases friction to help push the oil more uniformly through the fine-grain sands of the formation.
