Life-saving rules

Cenovus has adopted eight standardized rules from the Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) which will contribute to safer practices at our operations. These rules are now internationally recognized and our continued commitment to following them will reduce the likelihood of injuries and help prevent significant incidents. Almost all of our significant incidents are related to these few high-risk work activities. Our eight life-saving rules help us manage the risks associated with these tasks on a day-to-day basis.

To help promote these rules to our workers, we provide support materials to our staff and outline accountabilities for each rule. The eight life-saving rules are:

Obtain authorization before entering a confined space

Protect yourself against a fall when working at height

Work with a valid Work Permit when required

Verify isolation before work begins and use the specified life protecting equipment

Obtain authorization before overriding or disabling safety critical equipment

Follow prescribed lift plan

Do not work under or near overhead electric power lines

No alcohol or drugs while working or driving
