Our strategic approach

We're a company that strives to ensure the communities where we live and work are stronger and better off as a result of us being there. We want these communities to share in the benefits associated with our operations. One of the ways we can do this is through our community investment program, where we look to create shared value through our partnerships with community organizations.

Building better futures together is at the heart of our community investment strategy. We concentrate our efforts in three core areas - learning; safety and well-being; and sustainable communities. Our activities reflect our values and what we stand for - being involved and making a positive difference. We support a wide range of organizations that are focused on the needs that matter most to the local community.

And we do more than just make financial contributions. We provide volunteer time and gifts-in-kind. We bring organizations together to encourage collaboration and bigger community impact.

Signing a long-term agreement with Conklin

Cenovus has created a long-term agreement with the community of Conklin, Alberta, which will provide mutual benefits for as many as 40 years into the future. The agreement was approved by the community after a ratification vote in December 2010.

The agreement outlines our commitment to working with the Conklin community on matters including:

Cenovus is the first oil and gas company to enter into an agreement of this kind with the community. We're supporting the Conklin community's ability to understand and reduce the potential impacts of development while participating in the associated long-term benefits. As Cenovus expands its development, the community will receive additional support to help it manage any potential effects of growth.

Working with Stakeholders

We're building relationships with our stakeholders, engaging in dialogue, responding to questions and seeking to understand any concerns. Our stakeholders include groups such as shareholders and other investors, financial institutions, employees, business partners, communities, Aboriginal peoples, governments and non-government organizations.

$13.5 million in community funding

We are an Imagine Canada Caring company, which means we give one percent of our pre-tax profits to charitable or non-profit organizations. In 2010, we provided $13.5 million in community funding.

$1.6 million employee giving

Cenovus employees are active in both charitable giving and volunteering. This was demonstrated by our successful first annual Thanks & Giving employee campaign. Throughout the year, Cenovus matches employee donations up to $25,000 per employee, per year, which includes grants to the charitable organizations where our employees volunteer. In 2010, employees contributed $1.6 million.

We are focused on creating a workplace that people enjoy coming to every day, knowing that their work matters and is contributing to achieving the company's objectives and priorities.
