Rail

Transporting our products

Our crude-by-rail loading facility, Bruderheim Energy Terminal, is located near Edmonton, Alberta

In addition to pipelines, we also transport our oil by rail. Rail transportation allows us to reach customers and refineries located in areas that aren’t connected to a major pipeline. Our long-term plan is to have the ability to transport up to 20 percent of our oil by rail.

We want every barrel of Cenovus’s oil to reach its destination safely, no matter how it’s transported. According to the Railway Association of Canada, shipments of dangerous goods arrive at their destination incident free 99.98 percent of the time.

We own a crude-by-rail loading facility near Edmonton, Alberta. The Bruderheim Energy Terminal is part of our strategy to create additional transportation options for our products and is designed to help us capture global prices for our oil. We’ve hired a third-party service provider to help us manage the rail terminal, and we apply the same rigour and attention to safety, environmental performance and operational excellence that we demonstrate in our oil and natural gas production operations.  In 2016, we’ve shipped about 10,000 barrels per day of crude by rail, and we have the capacity to ship more than 70,000 barrels per day.

We have leased 1,100 coiled and insulated rail cars to transport our oil.
