A conventional oil property
Our Pelican Lake operation is located in the Greater Pelican Region, about 300 kilometres north of Edmonton. We initially began producing heavy oil at Pelican Lake in 1997 from a series of horizontal wells. Pelican Lake produced more than 24,000 gross barrels of oil per day in 2015. Cenovus has 100 percent ownership of Pelican Lake.
We’re always looking for ways to either improve existing technology or pursue new technology in an effort to enhance the recovery techniques we use to access oil. At Pelican Lake, we use polymer flooding which involves injecting water and small concentrations of natural and synthetic compounds called polymers to help push oil towards a producing well. Polymers are environmentally harmless and used in many common consumer products from plastics to disposable diapers.
We’re maintaining a disciplined approach to developing Pelican Lake given the current low oil price environment.
