Making a positive difference in our communities

December 2015 – We support our employee’s charitable giving through our Thanks & Giving campaign. Each fall, employees can donate to the registered charities that are meaningful to them and we match their donations, dollar for dollar.

But it’s not just about financial donations – giving happens in many ways during the campaign. We host company-wide food drives and coordinate a variety of volunteer events for staff and their family members.

During the 2015 Thanks & Giving campaign, fifteen volunteer events were held across Alberta and Saskatchewan, near our operating areas. Staff rolled up their sleeves and served turkey dinners, made sandwiches and donated non-perishable food items for a number of organizations including Ronald McDonald House Southern Alberta, Lac La Biche Heritage Society, Veterans Food Bank and Rolling Hills Seniors Drop in Centre, to name a few.

“In these tough economic times, it was especially important for us to continue with the Thanks & Giving campaign,” says Vicki Reid, Director, Community Affairs. “We're a company that’s made a commitment to make our communities stronger and better off as a result of us being there. Many of our communities and the charities that serve those communities need our support now more than ever. This is one way we can support increased community needs.”

In addition to helping our communities, the Thanks & Giving campaign is about employee choice. Employees can choose the organization they’d like to donate to and they can opt to volunteer or bring in a food donation instead of, or in addition to participating financially. Giving staff the support they need to make a difference for the causes that are important to them is one of the ways we ensure that Cenovus is a great place to work.

In December of 2014, Cenovus volunteers delivered donations to a handful of the many charities that employees chose to support during the 2014 Thanks & Giving campaign. Watch the video, filmed on smart phones and put together in-house, to see some of the impacts of the campaign.

Thanks & Giving by the numbers

Since 2010, Cenovus employees have:

  • Donated almost $7 million - with the Cenovus match that’s over $13 million
  • Volunteered more than 2,400 hours of their time during the campaign
  • Given almost 45,000 pounds of food
