The bigger picture — what would life be like without oil and natural gas?
When most people think of the everyday uses of oil and natural gas, they think of fuel for vehicles. But the reality is so many products we use on a daily basis are made possible by these resources, probably many more than most of us are even aware of.
Nearly everything we use in a day is made from oil, made by machinery dependent on oil, or transported by oil as either gasoline or diesel fuel. Oil is also used to make things like detergents, crayons, contact lenses, ink and artificial limbs. So the next time you brush your teeth, use a bandage or blow up a balloon, think about where the products you use every day come from - and imagine what life would be like without them!
Natural gas, one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels, is a part of our everyday life. We use it to heat our homes, cook our food and power the generators that turn on our lights. And, more and more, it's being used to fuel vehicles. There are more than five million natural gas vehicles currently in use around the world.
