FireSmart plan
We participated alongside the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, to create the FireSmart Guidebook and the Best Management Practices in Wildfire Prevention for the oil and gas industry.
The guidebook covers all aspects of wildfire prevention including best practices to reduce wildfire impacts, while recognizing the natural role of wildfire. The FireSmart program provides innovative solutions specifically for the oil and gas industry to manage and mitigate the risks of wildfire.
Taking this initiative home, a FireSmart Plan was implemented at our Christina Lake construction camp to reduce the threat of wildfire to our staff and infrastructure, while maintaining environmental integrity in the area. To eliminate potential fire hazard, almost four hectares of trees were thinned and pruned to create a FireSmart area adjacent to the camp. Reducing the fire hazard conserves the forest and protects the wildlife habitat for small mammals in the treated area.
